Charmaine Brown is an Aboriginal indie creative filmmaker, hailing from the Mid North Coast of the Gumbaynggirr community paternally and central Australia maternally, whose work is entrenched in unifying concepts of cultural connection, lived experience and the richness of authentic storytelling.

Raised in Sydney but brought up throughout the bush during her youth, Charmaine grew up to hold an affinity with all things nature—its sounds, its silences and the stories that live within it.

Among those stories was the legend of the Yowie; a creature renowned in Aboriginal folklore and story sharing. Often told by relatives during visits to family who lived on the outskirts of town near the bush, these memories stuck with her and later became a strong influence on her creative work.

Drawing from this upbringing, Charmaine's debut action-thriller THE YOWIE brings new life to an ancient legend through a distinctly Indigenous lens. Set in the misty, cold-toned Australian forest and bush, the film explores what happens when the old world and the new collide—when balance is broken and something ancient rises to restore it.

With a background in visual storytelling and community-driven creative work, Charmaine brings a rare voice to screen—one that understands the landscape not just as a setting, but as a character with its own memory and spirit.
